The BGSS eye exam, explained
A comprehensive eye exam at BGSS is a set of painless measurements and imaging tests followed by a consultation with an ophthalmologist. It checks whether you are a safe candidate for vision correction or lens surgery and screens for conditions such as dry eye, glaucoma and retinal disease.
For vision correction, the exam measures corneal thickness and shape, pupil size, prescription and the space inside your eye. These numbers decide whether SMILE, LASIK, LASEK or ICL is right for you.
For cataract, presbyopia, dry eye or glaucoma concerns, additional imaging of the lens, tear film, retina and optic nerve is added.

How to prepare
To make your measurements accurate:
- Stop wearing soft contact lenses for the period your coordinator advises
- Stop hard or ortho-k lenses for longer, as advised
- Bring your glasses and any previous eye records
- Bring a list of medications and medical conditions
- Plan not to drive after dilation and bring sunglasses

Comprehensive Eye Exam in Busan: frequently asked questions
How long does the eye exam take?
Allow about 2–3 hours, including measurements, dilation if needed and the doctor consultation.
Do I need to stop wearing contact lenses?
Yes. Contact lenses change the shape of the cornea, so they need to be removed for a period before the exam. Your coordinator will tell you how long for your lens type.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Usually yes. Dilating drops blur near vision and make you sensitive to light for a few hours, so do not plan to drive afterwards.
Can I have surgery on the same day as my exam?
It depends on your results and the procedure. Your doctor decides whether surgery can be scheduled and when. Please do not book flights until your schedule is confirmed.
Is the exam useful even if I don’t have surgery?
Yes. It also screens for dry eye, glaucoma, cataract and retinal disease.
Can I get my exam in English?
Yes. Coordinators support you in English and Chinese throughout your visit.
